Can we do this? This is a question that many people ask, including baseball organizations and front offices. Can we make this trade? Can we resign him to an extension? But now we’re not talking about front office moves. We’re not talking about optioning a player to AAA, or putting him on waivers. That can wait. But can baseball wait?
Baseball has stood still for about a month now. There have been no games, no fans, no early season jumps. There are no great early season stories. But the rest can wait. Mr Rob Manfred, we just want baseball. I don’t care that there will be no fans. Please, Commissioner Rob Manfred, find a way. Anything. I’m getting desperate.
This season will forever have an asterisk. That is inevitable. But will the players be able to handle a year off? Edwin Encarnacion will get a year older. It will be tough for him.
Over the past month, I’ve noticed some of the same questions popping up. So I’ll answer them down below.
Can we wait another year?
Hmmmm… skip.
I’m just kidding, if I’m pretending to be Rob Manfred, then I’ve replicated him well. But still, the radio silence from the MLB does not help my nerves. It’s likely that the season will start at the 4th of July, and to me, that’s 9 months without baseball (I don’t include spring training). That’s too long. Give us something. Anything.
What will the plan be if we actually manage to start up this year?
I would assume that it would:
-Start at July 4th
-Be in Arizona
-Last until Mid November
-Double headers twice a week
-No all star break
-Be somewhere between a 110 and a 140 game season
-Take place without fans for the majority of the season
-Be televised publicly
-The playoffs start Late November and end in December
-Extended playoffs
-2 to 4 wild card spots
And that’s just the beginning. Baseball is in a bad spot. So is basketball. And football. And soccer. And so on. You get the picture.
But really, can we wait another year?
Ah yes, I completely ignored the question last time, and I went off on an irrelevant tangent. Can the players wait another year? It will be tough for them, but after a couple of years, baseball will be in the full swing again. We could be able to, but maybe not.
What can I do baseball related to pass the time?
Well, there’s a number of things that you can do:
-OOTP Baseball. This is a baseball simulator game.
-Re runs of games on YouTube. Pretty much every game in the past 5 years is on YouTube.
-MLB Network runs re runs of old games.
-Any other baseball video game.
-Read old articles on my website!
Is there any chance of the Mid-May start time that some people said was possible?
I guess there’s a little chance. It’s not likely, and if you want to know exactly when the MLB will come back, fast forward 2 months. We’ll likely know by then whether baseball will come back for this season.
If I don’t have a computer or a TV, what can I do to pass the time?
There’s this amazing board game called Strat-O-Matic baseball. It’s amazing, and you can play it solo. It’s a 3 games in 1 type of deal, and the three modes (games) are basic, advanced, and super advanced. Basic is easy to pick up and play, while Super Advanced gives you all of the realism and depth of a real baseball game. Advanced is the happy medium. The sets can be pricey though, but there are some cheaper sets. The Rivalry Edition sets come with 6 all time teams. The teams are the Cubs, Cardinals, Red Sox, Yankees, Giants, and Dodgers.
We can all hope that baseball comes back, but in the meantime, there is tons to do.
